If your imports are slow then I would NOT use commit=y(if i had the disk space for a large rbs)
make sure your arch logging is off and you are using a single very larg rbs with large buffer size (if you have a luxury of a lot of ram then set to the size of largest object ... i know this is not always realistic)
also use the indexfile and create indexes after the import.
